OFF TOPIC -

Chris - I see we are sailing together AGAIN (Dream 12/5/09).

There is a roll call running for that sailing. Drop on by and say HELLO. Perhaps we will have a chance to meet you after all these years.

We were at Baie Rouge a week ago today, and would have never discovered it were it not for your tips!

--- back on topic now....

I can't name just ONE Maître d' as a favorite. We have had the pleasure of eating in several dining rooms with many friendly and helpful people.

Here are some: Bimal, George, Paul, Freddy, Ajimi, Victor, and Stipe.

I can say that Damir failed to meet our expectations - and was MIA the entire cruise on our April 2008 sailing. Thankfully, he was not onboard last week!

Tom

We've been on five cruise, 3 RCI, 2 Carnival. The best maitre'd was the singing maitre'd - Ken Byrne. He was on our Carnival Freedom cruise in July 2007. He is the first maitre'd that we have ever had who gave personalized service to every table. He made it a point to visit every table every night and spent at least a minute per table. We saw him take care of several issues with waiters without hesitation. In addition, he kept us entertained during dinner with his performance. We're hoping that he is our maitre'd on Carnival Dreams inaugural cruise next September.

Mr. V! Yay! Didn't know he was on the Miracle now...DH and I cruised with him on the Valor in 07, and ditto - he's the only maitre'd we've ever tipped. LOVED him! He moved DH and I to a 4-top table with new friends we made on the Lido deck - good table, great waiter, no problems. And Mr. V stopped by repeatedly to make sure our table was ok - and remembered our names. Time to look for a cruise on the Miracle if he's still there...

Mr. V was our Maitre d' on the GLORY last week - still there as we speak (type). He stopped by a few times and talked with us. Very helpful and friendly.

He was in the Platinum (aft) dining room. Joesph was in the Golden dining room and was the one who headed up the Platinum guests (private) galley tour - also a very nice fellow.

They switch dining rooms monthly.

Mr. V Indicated that he would be heading to the Triumph next (not sure when).

Thanks for the info! Time to look at booking the Glory then! Unless he's on the Triumph next month which would be great..Don't remember much about the maitre'd on the Triumph last year except for the fact that he seemed very distracted and didn't connect very well...Mr. V would be a nice surprise. Thanks again!

Default No Question...

Josef, super charged showtime Josef is one MD who has really made an impression on people.

He is one MD who ACTUALLY goes from table to table all during the cruise.
He actaully meets all his guests during the week, and will go out of his way to make your entire cruise a great one.

He actually remembered us from our first Celebration cruise, when we sailed with him the second time.

And..when he whipsers..."It's showtime..." you know there is more then just a few singing waiters coming up. He really makes dining fun.

I have been on nine cruises, and can not tell you the name of any other MD I have had. But, like so many others...I do know Josef.

Thumbs up Carnival Conquest Freddie Silva

Hello Everyone!
I have to say as to doing "their job" this MD went up and beyond & deserved more than the tip I could afford. One night I woke up really thirsty & looking for water & ice ... I was over tired, groggy and lost on the wrong floor looking to find an elevator to get "right" again. I bumped into Mr Silva. He laughed & said "You look lost, can I help you?" I told him what 'went wrong" and he he replied' You stay right here, give me the water pitcher, I will be right back" I did. He returned in short time with both water and a ice bucket full of ice. walked me to an elevator and showed me the map to make sure I got back to my cabin ok. I did. I thought that was kewl! He had helped us find just the right table when we 1st came into the dining room and that really made our dining experience super. Helping me ... on his off hrs. well that was superior. Shown is a pix of me and Freddie on Formal night. He was kewl to pose with me and John.
And so was Freddie's assistant, Slavenia and our waitress Natasha!

I just had to let you know that I don't believe in tipping. But that doesn't mean people do not survive by earning the tips. So I tip where according to service. I see people "doing their job" in just about every industry. but the attitude varies. Those who really enjoy doing the best they can & survive on tipping. Deserve a tip. Just my 2 cents.

As to Ken Byne on the Splendor. He is a fantastic performer. Really enjoyed his sets at dinner time. He was both pleasant to talk to and did keep an open mind in helping us find the right table. We did tip him as well.

I think alot of people don't give a tip, unless they are requesting some sort of different assignment and are helped out.

We just recently sailed on the Glory, and our Maitre'D was Joseph - our Supercharged Maitre'D! He was great...he came over to our table of 10 every night, he danced with my grandkids, he always had a smile for everyone who came in - and always wished us a good evening when we left.

He made a great dining experience absolutely awesome! I am sure that he earns every tip he gets, and is very thankful for them as he worked very hard to make our cruise dining a success!

I agree! It's SHOW TIME!! Joseph is by our favorite and he sure does get tipped. I was seated upstairs and had a good eye shot of the people walking in. Almost everyone I saw handed him their tip envelope. Including us.

We were on the Triumph in Nov last year, too. I think his name was Constantine. I agree that he wasn't that attentive. He did let us switch tables, so we tipped him. But, he wouldn't be my favorite.

Interesting thread. It reminds of a similar one about the CD's. I guess it only makes a diference to someone IF they need the services of the Maitre D'.

That being said, I have not noticed any posts from someone who has mentioned any MD from Valor. That could mean that the MD just does his job well without being intrusive or no one has needed the MD? (I don't think so).

We REALLY want make sure we get a 2-top for of 10/26 trip.

Who IS the MD for Valor and has anyone had any good or bad experiences recently?

Yusef is good, entertaining and accomodating. Never has a problem.

However, this will come to a SHOCK but the best service I have received was from Constatine onboad the Triumph
It was before we were platinum and I always figured the rich or platinum got the best service. Well, Constatine proved that wasn't true.
I think the best thing was he NEVER interupted dinner with stupid announcements. He waited until dessert was almost finished. He wasn't obnoxius about the color game thing (which I do not care for). He had a dry sense of humor but told us a joke every night. He came to our table everynight and asked about our meal and our service
He switched our dining three times! We had tried late seating but couldn't handle the wait. We were starving cause here at home we eat at 5:45
I asked when my favorite dessert Tiramisu was going to be served. Ended up being sick that night but the next night he had it delivered with the dessert I ordered, without even being asked.
The staff doesn't care for him. They say he isn't as well schooled as other Carnival MD....and that he is stiff and very strict.
I enjoyed him...he actually cared!

We must have had him during an off time. He did pay attention to a few tables.

Just returned from a sailing on Glory. Joseph was our Maitre'd. What can I say? He was definitely memorable. My wife and I still look at each other and say, "It's showtime". I did get a little freaked out when he wore the pirate outfit with the light-up glasses during that evening's song.

However, even though Joseph was memorable, George the Greek is unforgettable. We've been lucky enough to sail with him twice. He is a pleasure. There is a reason he's the most senior maitre'd at Carnival. I believe he's been with Carnival over 20 years. Oompah!

Default I vote for Dino on the Carnival Freedom

He was wonderful-got our tables changed from 2 to a table for 10. Also,
on the night before my birthday (went to speciality dining on my birthday) he sent the waiters to sing. He stopped by to visit us every night and was totally charming. Our friends went the next week and he had the chefs make creme brule for dessert each night!

Our vote for best Maitre D' is definitely Ken Byrne who is currently on the Splendor as Carnival's Senior Maitre D'. We also got to talk with him every night and his Sinatra renditions are tremendous.

We've had other Maitre D's that were very good - George the Greek, Omur, Rafal, to name a few and we just had Mr. V last week on the Glory. This is his last cruise before a 2 month vacation. We always seem to have some little request and have always had good results so we do tip the Maitre D's.

Default Ken !

Yup- another vote for Ken! He made our Splendor dining experience extra special. Handled everything in the dining room without ever looking flustered. Beautiful voice! Kind and sweet personality.
Hope we will have the pleasure of sailing with Ken again!
Yay Ken!

A Maitre D is the restaurant manager. Their job is to oversee the entire operation of their department, which includes talking to Guests, handling complaints, and keeping their staff happy. I was a F&B Manager with Walt Disney World for 13 Great years, working long hours, and never expected a tip. I received a salary to perform my job. My service TEAM worked for tips/grats. I took pleasure in making every one of our Guests' experiences ones they will never forget. If my TEAM made good money b/c they were exceptional, and were happy, then I took pride knowing I did my job! Also, before the complaints start coming in, one of my best friends was a Maitre D, and his salary was quite a bit more than mine.....just fyi.

I guess I am in the minority. I can't remember any Maitre 'D from any of my cruises, nor any of the cruise directors.
