I hate the implication that those that are lower income are lower class. I know plenty of people who would be considered wealthy that have no manners or common social skills. My best friends parents would be a perfect example (going into a fancy establishment with wife beater shirts and frayed cut offs, speaking at innapropriate levels and brash...but very very well off). But generally I agree that people in general have become lazier and more selfish/self-centered which often translates into the experiences posters relate here. But I think the problem is among ALL socio-economic statuses.

I remember seeing that dress and that it was the avatar for someone on cruise critic. I questioned it once, and got yelled at by others for being rude too funny

Just returned from our 4th "fun-less" cruise with a 1 year old and a 3 year old, this time to Alaska.

It was so bad that we have decided to take the kids on another cruise next summer. It will be their 5th time spoiling our fun!

Photo session: Don't understand some folks in family surroundings...wish they would be more considerate.

Toddlers in Diapers: Ok in your home or backyard, not ok in a public dining room of ANY kind. I love children but put some clothes on them.

Toddlers misbehaving: Parents who have no regard for anyone but themselves get on my last nerve. We don't even go out to eat right now because I have a 3 year old that can self combust at any second. We took him on a cruise last year at 2 1/2 and when he wasn't behaving he was removed from the dining area. We scheduled a night at the steak house, but only after a grandparent agreed to watch him.

Glad you had fun, sorry that some folks don't know how to behave.

Just off a 7 day cruise with my husband and two younger daughters (9 & 12). For the most part, we had a really nice time but there were a couple things that surprised me that we experienced on board. I realize it was a small part of the experience, but just curious what you would have thought.

First was in regards to the photo sessions. There was a couple we walked past at about 8:00PM that were hard to miss. They were posing in various sexual positions and the photographer was snapping away while their group of friends were cheering them on. My kids were like - why is he doing that to her? Yeah....

Second was during the main dining room. On the last night of the cruise there was a toddler running around in just a diaper (no other clothes or shoes). I realize that not everyone likes to dress up for dinner, but come on.

We also ate at the steak house. The food and service were great, but two tables over had a one year old doing laps around the parents table. She was pulling things off of the surrounding tables while the parents ignored them.

Also - are non-potty trained kids supposed to be in the pools? I know on Disney they had a dedicated toddler pool that was drained and refilled nightly for obvious reasons. Keep in mind I have kids and they have been on every sailing with us since we had them. I just make sure they followed the rules of the ship with dress code, etc.

Maybe I should mind my own business, but am I crazy to think that's over the top a bit, or are people "just on vacation and anything goes?"

can someone either post a link or pic for the chain dress or tell me what to google? I googled "chain dress" but nothing terribly shocking came up, so I figure I am missing something.

You are 100% correct. I double checked carnival's FAQ and it did indeed say swim diapers are not allowed. i didnt know that. Glad i didnt bring my daughter on the my recent cruise a couple of weeks ago. I would have been breaking the rules. not on purpose, just out of sheer ignorance.

when you're right, you're right. lol.

Google cruise chain dress. Go to images and there is one of a couple in front of a picture of a cruise ship, a few rows down.

We would LOVE to bring our little grand daughter on a cruise with us. And we will. AS SOON AS SHE LEARNS TO EAT AT THE TABLE WITHOUT RUNNING AROUND. Hopefully, by 5, but if not......then later. Worse case scenerio....her parents come along and eat with her in Lido and we dine in the MDR. I will not ruin OUR dining experience OR that of our neighbors.

Ahem... that's one zero too many. (It would be 30,000 passengers per ship.) 75,000 passengers is about right, though. Your main point, however, is valid. It's still the size of a small city / medium size suburb and *someone* among those is bound to be doing *something* inconsiderate at any given time.

At the steakhouse I think I would have a chat with the maitre d'. I'd tell him that I am not paying $35 per person only to have my meal ruined by someone's kid running around like a banshee. He would either do something about it or I would march down to the purser's office and demand that the charge be removed from my account. If they refused, I'd have them take $70 off the gratuities.

Changing a diaper in the dining room? Same thing...go to the maitre d'. If nothing is done about it, threaten to have their gratuities removed – and then follow through with the threat.

People vote with their money...hitting someone in the wallet is the best way to get a point across.

That's 2 to 3 times the size of the population of Milwaukee. So yes strange things happen. Overt PDA, unsupervised children, "me" attitude. We see it at home and we see it on vacation.

Sadly the Maîtres d' in the restaurants did nothing and no one took responsibility for enforcing the pool rule regarding diapers. (Yuck!) Hopefully you took the time to let someone know.

I took "low skill set and lack of social skills" to mean low class, but not in the socioeconomic definition. You can find "low class" in all socioeconomic classes.

Someone suggested a couple of days ago on another thread that young children shouldn't be allowed in the steakhouse -- well, he was FLAMED!

I kind of agree with him.....

I also agree that the scenarios OP described were -- in additon to being failures of parents to parent appropriately -- were also failure on the part of the maitre d'. Yikes!
