Default Concordia recovery about to step up pace

Hi All
On Friday morning at 8am The massive Micoperi 30 will arive at Giglio. At over 7000 ton with accomodation for over 200, a Hospital, a Gym and two big cranes among other things. The barge has just sailed from Croatia after a major refit. Hopefully this may make progress move a bit faster.
Meanwhile there appears to be a body of opinion in Italy that the stress on the starboard side that will happen when the parbuckle begins will be too great and the starboard side will collapse.
Since the closing down of the Last Salute camera we have to rely on Giglio news for time lapse photography. Last Sunday I emailed Giglio news to ask if the port camera could be turned seaward and give a better view of the salvage. They replied on Sunday that the camera will be moved "in the next few days"

The Oceanos which sank off South Africa in the early 90's is laying fully on her side, and they do say that eventually the ship will "pancake" as ships are not made to lie on their sides. 20 years have passed and she has not fully collapsed yet as per the most recent dive reports. The bridge has collapsed but the rest of this old ship is still sitting there in about 100m of water. There are also Youtube videos of it.

Hi Micki
Thats the site I have been following its journey from Croatia on, Have you noticed that if you click on the arrow on the ID box it gives more info on the barge. If you google Micoperi 30 you can get a photo and much more detail on the barge.
Hi Stan
I know nothing about salvage I'm afraid but the debate seems to be about the stress caused when they right to right her that may be too much for the weakened starboard side and she will rip open.
However the critics of the present plan seem to be lead by someone pushing a plan to fill her with some sort of foam and from that she will right herself. This foam is 60 times lighter than water ! I think they may have a financial interest in the foam application

I did goggle Micoperi because I wanted to see what the barge looked like. That is one huge barge!

I know the stress has been talked about so it will be interesting as to whether they stick with the plan or make the change.

Just learned that the Tug Snipe is arriving with Micopiri 30 in the morning.
Looks like its going to get very crowded around Concordia.

Good news, the port camera has been moved.
The not so good news is that the salvage operation isnt in the centre of the screen and much farther away than we had with last salute.
But thanks Giglio News for keeping your promise to me

Clive, no, it's not center like it use to be. They zoomed in a tiny bit on the view which probably accounts for that. We'll still see something of the other side now so it's all good.
Thanks for writing them about changing it.

Default Concordia tragedy thread

There is already a huge thread on this topic with many mavens in the fields of maritime safety, law both Italian, American and UK, camera angles and history. Perhaps you could consolidate this and the rest of us can get on with our busy lives.

I am not surprised all the 2nd guessers are starting to post opinions.........

I have no insider knowledge, there was a great deal of stability and strength calculation done before this plan was approved. They would have determined if it as reasonable to expect her to hold together.

Some would say too many so this would have been lost in there.

Clive, I see the barge is up against the ship and their part in thie work is started.
I noticed that not much is going on around the funnel. Wondering if they've gone as far as they intended with removal.

Hi Micki
Isnt it so frustrating that we cant see what they are doing on the port side??
I read recently that there is 100+ staff working there and this will go up to 360 when Micoperi arrives.
The loss of Last Salute foils us knowing whats happening with the funnel. They have removed the black top section but I cant see whether they have removed all the different "exhausts" inside the funnel. You could be right that if the is only the funnel shell it might not be worth the effort of removing it.
I presume that pontoon on the left of the picture is working on the structures to tie the ship to to stop it sliding into deeper water and Micopiri will initially construct the underwater platform they hope to roll her onto and then work on all the floatation tanks on the port side.
Just puzzles me slightly that the timetable seems to have the righting of the ship in January/ February when the weather will be at its worse.

Cheers
Clive
