Lyttleton picks itself up after quake

It is a tiny town at the heart of the jolt - and it shows.
Lyttelton, the pretty port village that proudly proclaims itself as the gateway to Christchurch, has been devastated by the 6.3 magnitude earthquake that struck New Zealand's second largest city just before 1pm (11am AEDT) on Tuesday.

One of our favorite photos is one taken in 2007 from our ship across the bay while in Lyttleton. It's so sad to realize that it may not look like this again for a long time to come. Just heard on the TV news here that one Australian is dead

At least 75 people have been killed, with hundreds more missing, after a 6.3-magnitude earthquake rocked Christchurch, New Zealand yesterday.

UPDATE 9.29AM AEST
New Zealand Prime Minister confirms 75 fatalities which 55 people identified so far.
In a miraculous discovery, 15 people were found alive in a pocket in the CTV building.
There are still at least 300 people missing, including 100 Australians.

What a beautiful photo.....in fact it looks like a painting....I agree such a pretty place.

Yes the CBD is off limits. The airport has reopened now but I'd advise against coming to spend time in the city for a few of weeks at least. There is no water or sewerage in most of the city. If you're flying in and heading out of town you will be fine.

yes not the best timeing as we did plan this awhile ago, we are to stay with friends but we are just waiting to see how is all pans out. the trip is all insured any way. and some how think that they do not people on hols there. and we can go another time if not this time.

search and rescue teams from qld, nsw and vic fly out this morning by air force planes. from brisbane amberly and richmond air bases.I think there was about 160 personal plus all there search and rescue gear/ high tec stuff.

Parliament set aside its usual business and today adjourned until March 8 after expressing its sympathy and condolences to those who have lost loved ones in the Christchurch earthquake.
``Yesterday was indeed one of New Zealand's darkest days,'' Deputy Prime Minister Bill English said on behalf of Prime Minister John Key.

Christchurch quake: Theft arrests in devastated CBD


Six people have today been arrested for theft and burglary in the quake-hit Christchurch CBD.
Superintendent Dave Cliff said the area within the four avenues area of the central city will be restricted from 6.30pm tonight for safety and security reasons.
"We have made six arrests for theft and burglary in the CBD today," he said.

Christchurch quake: 15 CTV staff believed to have died



Fifteen Canterbury TV (CTV) staff are believed to have died when their central Christchurch building collapsed after yesterday's magnitude 6.3 quake, CTV chairman Nick Smith says.
Police were "100 per cent sure" there were no survivors in the earthquake-damaged CTV building, today calling off the search for bodies there, shifting their efforts to sites where it was believed people were trapped alive.
More than 80 people were believed to be in still in the building, which housed the regional television station, a nursing school and a language school.
CTV chairman Nick Smith told NZPA the television channel had 24-25 fulltime staff.
"We're working on the assumption that everyone we haven't managed to contact was in the building, and that would number probably 15," he said.
"We haven't had anything confirmed, we haven't been given any names, we're just going off our own tally."

Mr Smith, business manager and director of Allied Press of Dunedin, which owns the Otago Daily Times, said he had travelled to Christchurch today to support staff.
"We're just having a staff get-together with those who have survived. That's the most important thing at the moment," he said.
"(They've) lost a lot of friends, a lot of colleagues, a lot of talent and a lot of life-long relationships...
"They're not happy. It's very sorrowful."

I can't believe you actually posted that you are still considering going and "see how it pans out" I'm going to say what everyone else is thinking. As if CHCH needs you there! There's no water, no phones, no sewerage.......they are broadcasting only essential travel. I can't see how that will change in under a week. I don't think anyone on CC gives a flying fig that it's not the best timing for YOU! Gimme a break!

Blunt but you're right, it's not much of a holiday if you're digging a hole in the ground to go to the bathroom and can't shower. Think about taking your friends to Queenstown or the Golden Bay or somewhere else that's lovely at this time of year.

Yeah, blunt maybe......but perhaps I think outside the square. There are going to be so many people wanting to get over there from here......family and close friends of the injured and dead and others who houses are trashed........to be there, to help, to grieve......and let's not forget the area is volatile, at least 100 aftershocks between 4 and 6.....people who have no business being there get caught up in another big quake, and already drained resources are searching for them.....................yeah I don't see how anyone who doesn't have an essential reason to fly into Chistchurch should be there. There are other essential services being mobilised and deployed.......trauma counselling services and the like......they will also want seats on commerical aircraft

My opinion, and if I get banned or a 'naughty' email for saying so.....sobeit.

Australia's Prime Minister Julia Gillard has confirmed that an Australian resident was among those killed in Christchurch's devastating earthquake.

Ms Gillard told a Canberra press conference "a long-term Australian resident of New Zealand origin has lost his life in this disaster".

She said a stranger tried to help the man in the last hours of his life, and thanked him for his efforts.

"Reports are sketchy and we are still working through the details, but it appears this person is a family man and our condolences go to his family," she said.
