I was there a few years ago and the Grand Princess had to anchor and use the tenders. We came in near the Yacht Club at America's Cup Ave. and Long Wharf. The Visitors' Center is about 1/2 - 1 block away.

There is no cruise ship dock in Newport RI. Newport is a tender port. The tender dock is at the south end of Perotti Park almost opposite the Harbor Master's office. Perotti Park is located on America's Cup Ave (rte 138) one block south of the Newport Visitor's Center.
I would suggest meeting your family members at the NVC because there is limited space in the tender dock area and it will be congested with tour buses.
There is a Panera Bread on you left at the intersection just before Perotti Park; and if you go by the Barking Crab on your left, you have past Perotti Park.
